Gossip Girl starts out with the return of Upper East Side "It" girl, Serena van der Woodsen after getting kicked out of boarding school. Blair Waldorf is a longtime friend and occasional rival of Serena's. The show also follows Chuck Bass, son of the wealthy and powerful Bart Bass and bad boy of Manhatten; "Golden boy" Nate Archibald, Chuck's best friend and Blair's ex; and other colorful characters of the turbulent Manhattan scene include Dan Humphrey and his sister Jenny, middle-class kids on the outside looking in on the privileged gang.
